DrinksFood in the United States is big businesses.  These businesses are not based on what is best for a person.  They are based on what is most profitable. The food industry profits come from highly refined foods based on chemical flavors, and preservatives with extravagant advertising to convince people to eat it. The product of this is obesity and wealthy business people.  Obesity is strongly linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and cancer. Most concerning, obesity severely limits a persons quality of life.

 

Next, enter the diet and supplement industry.  Gluten-free, South Beach, Atkins, miracle diet pills, berries, specially-formulated metabolic drinks, fad diets. For every fast food and cola advertisement there is an equal get fit quick gimmick. There is no diet program that has been scientifically proven to consistently produce weight loss over a two year period. A 20 pound weight loss from a rigid fad diet is generally followed by a 25 pound weight gain.  The diet and supplement business is unregulated and there is no way of knowing which products are good, bad, bogus or harmful.  Like the Food industry the diet industry is largely based on false advertising and focused on business profits.

 

FoodsAdvertising is generally misleading or down right false.  Do super-models really drink cola's and eat oversized hamburgers?Are injury lawyers really interested in people getting what they deserve?  Do rappers hang out with dozens of beautiful girls drinking sodas? Do pick-up trucks really go skiing and do barrels roles? No, but advertising sells.  Doesn't matter the product or how bad it is for a person, make a great ad and people will buy it.  

 

The best things in life are free and everyone possesses the common sense that it takes to live a physically fit lifestyle.  

1-Calories in; calories out.  If you burn more calories than you consume, you loose weight.
2-Most people gain weight over years, not weeks and should focus on loosing weight over time as well.
3-Changing to a more active, physically fit lifestyle must be something that is sustainable and enjoyable. Fad diets, ab crunchers and the latest infomercial are not likely to help long term.

 

Get up, get out and get moving. What you do is not important, just do something. A varied exercise program is often best to avoid boredom and overuse injuries. Walking,

jogging, and biking are great aerobic conditioning activities, but anything where a person is out and moving is beneficial. A general guideline is aerobic conditioning for 30 to 60 minutes five to six days a week.

 

The National Weight Control Registry has demonstrated that people that lose weight and keep it off generally do the following:


1-Weight themselves daily or weekly.

2-Eat breakfast everyday.

3-Modify their food intake in some way to lose weight.

4-Increase their physical activity, with the most frequently reported form of activity being walking.

5-Most maintain a low calorie, low fat diet and do high levels of activity.


Everyones road to a healthy, happy lifestyle is different.  Some helpful options are:

-Always eat breakfast.  Good breakfast options are hard-boiled eggs, half a peanut-butter sandwich on whole grain bread, berries.

-Drink a full large glass of water before eating anything. 

-Drink water.  8 glasses a day.

-Do not snack.  

-Avoid things with high-fructose corn syrup.

-Only eat at the dinner table.  

-Do not eat when watching TV.

-Portion sizes are out of control.  If you eat at a restraurant, put half of whatever they serve you in a to-go box before you start eating.  Its a free meal for tomorrow.
-Avoid soft drinks, colas, sweet tea

-Exercise everyday.  If you have not exercised in years, start by walking for 30 minutes every morning. 
-Read the ingredients: if you have no idea what some of the ingredients are, your body does not either.  Do not eat it.
-Eat fresh, raw broccoli, kale, collards, spinach, collards, turnip greens, mustard greens, swiss chard.
